Our collaboration with the Centre for Literacy in Primary Education

It has been a great privilege to work with the Centre for Literacy in Primary Education (CLPE) in developing stronger links between English and literacy in our International Primary Curriculum. Both our organisations saw from our first meeting the parallels in pedagogy and a shared vision in the dispositions, knowledge and skills we believe are beneficial to students.

We have begun our collaboration by mapping a CLPE book to every IPC unit in Milepost 1, 2 and 3. The majority of books come from the Power of Reading programme, a hugely successful programme raising the outcome of student’s reading attainment and enjoyment. Each Power of Reading text has an accompanying scope and sequence – a teaching plan for the term or half term. Many of these scope and sequences are freely available online and where they exist, we will include a direct link. Other books that we have mapped come from either the Power of Pictures programme – recently selected for an EEF RSA research project – Poetry Line or their Core Book collection. All texts are rich additions into any classroom.

The mapping documents will be available on both websites. Within each IPC unit for Milepost 1, 2 and 3, we will then be adding in the book, direct link to the book within a particular CLPE programme, and specific guidance. This will be across all units so will naturally be a long term project for us. The intention is for schools to have support in linking IPC units with a text to enhance both literacy learning and learning across the subjects within the IPC.

We are planning on continuing the collaboration into 2018 with a joint webinar and attendance at each other’s events.

Whether you are a school that is currently using both the IPC and the Power of Reading Programme, or using one of them, we hope it may be of interest that there is close alignment in the approaches of both.

Even if you’re not currently using either the IPC or Power of Reading, you may be interested to consider how both the curriculum of IPC and the Programme of Power of Reading can work together. We look forward to hearing from your experiences.
